We prepare so much for our newborn that sometimes we can overlook the fact that we also need to take care of ourselves and get ready for the postpartum period. If you’re already a mom, you’ll know that sometimes it can be a little demanding. If you are a mom-to-be, don’t panic! It’s just a matter of preparing ourselves with all the necessary things. So here’s our list of our favorite products to add to your cart and different ways to pamper ourselves during this time
If you have had a natural childbirth, you may need a little extra help down there and these essential items could help you right away:
Perineal Spray
To help you relieve the pain and discomfort of perineal stitches. You can use it for those first post childbirth bathroom trips( after bath or toilet use).
I personally like to use products with natural ingredients, and Earth Mama Herbal Perineal spray is definitely a good choice.
Peri bottle
Peri bottles have an ergonomic designed that it will make easy to squeez water on the perineum (area between the vaginal opening and the anus). Helping you to cleanse the area, without wiping with toilet paper and relieve postpartum discomfort.
Some other items will help us feel more confident and comfortable.:
Disposable Undies
Most likely the hospital will offer you simple large pads, which is totally fine. But for that first week where bleeding can be heavier or you can find yourself dealing with urinary incontinence, these disposable incontinence underwear looks and feels like “real” panties. In addition to having a sophisticated fit, they have a soft feel that will make you feel very comfortable.
Comfy but sexy PJ’s
Loose-fitting and soft pajamas are definitely one of the best clothing you can wear after childbirth. However, just because your pajamas are comfortable doesn’t mean they have to be hideous. Make sure to get a stylish pair of pajamas and why not a sexy one? For example you can get yourself a cute robe. Start your motherhood journey comfortable but in style!
Postpartum Underwear
During this recovery phase, you will undoubtedly need postpartum underwear that is soft and stretchy enough to accommodate large pads.
Postpartum mesh underwear is a great option, also after a cesarean section, since they are very elastic, lightweight and breathable. In addition to being very practical, some brands can be washed and worn multiple times.
Postpartum Belly Wrap
Getting back into pre-baby shape it’s a process that takes time and effort for most people. It is believed that wearing a postpartum belt has many advantages in helping your recovery, if done correctly. It will help promote good posture , compression of the abdominal muscles, help with uterine contractions, reduction of swelling and the possibility that it will help you shrink faster. So why not give it a try?
Planning to breastfeed?
Then these postpartum items are a must:
Natural nipple cream
Having sore nipples when you’re trying to breastfeed your newborn can be painful. With help, feeding should quickly become more comfortable again. But there are also products that can help you with the sore, cracked or bleeding nipples. Once again, our favorite product is this organic nipple butter, from the Earth mama brand, which doesn’t need to be wash off before nursing.
Haaka Pump
Leaking milk often happens in the early weeks of breastfeeding. Using a Haaka is a smart way to collect that milk, by using the power of natural suction, plus, it can help relieve engorgement.
So don’t hesitate to froze all that milk during the firsts weeks neither start to pump early. Therefore you can let daddy to feed and bond with baby too. Although some babies will not agree to switch from breast to bottle, it is worth a try.
This way, you can have some fun night with friends and why not? have a well-deserved glass of wine. Remember that you should have enough milk in reserve to give the baby until the alcohol is completely gone from your body.
Nursing Bras
Breasts tend to feel heavier during breastfeeding and some moms might experience itchiness, sensitivity, tenderness or even feel sweaty. Therefore the support of a nursing bra with natural fabrics can make a difference and make you feel more comfortable.
Nursing Pads
Whether you decide to breastfeed or not, breasts can leak milk after birth. Nursing pads can prevent embarrassing leaks from soaking through your clothes. From disposable to reusable options… you can try both! While reusables are certainly eco-friendly, disposables are very absorbent and convenient.
Hot & cold gel packs
Depending on your needs, you can use them as a hot or cold compress. For example, using it as a hot compress before breastfeeding can help increase milk flow. Heat therapy can also help relieve clogged ducts and mastitis.
Applying cold compresses between feedings can relieve pain and reduce swelling.
Drink plenty of water and eat healthy snacks
Your body will probably crave for a cup of coffee, but since we know that beverages affect breast milk, water is the way to go! Keeping a bottle of water with you is a good way to stay hydrated and compensate for the extra water your body will use to make milk.
Besides, it’s good to know that you’ll get hungry! And a hungry mom will turn into an angry one. So snacks will quickly become your best friends. Choose fiber and healthy fats over empty calories. Another great idea is to bake and keep your own lactation cookies on hand. This way you’ll control hunger, helping you increase milk production at the same time.
Chores can wait…
You’ll probably hear people say, “When the baby sleeps, you sleep,” and sometimes it can be a very annoying phrase.
How can I sleep with so much to do? While it’s true that there are a lot of chores around the house to do, you need to take the time to do something you really enjoy, such as reading, writing, playing the guitar, or baking those lactation cookies… anything!
Prepare spaces with all your essentials
For example, you can place a caddy next to your bed and fill it up with all the things you will need at your fingertips, including nutritious snacks that you’re probably going to be craving for.
It is not a bad idea to set up one in the bathroom as well, with everything you need there within easy reach.
Set some “Spa Time”
Last, but not least, remember that your well-being is important and needs a little attention. Make your bathroom your sacred place of relaxation and take time whenever possible to pamper your body. Fill it up with all those creams, scrubs and products you like! You can place candles, oils, salts, maybe a little lucky bamboo or just turn on soothing music.
Take a good bath, scrub your body, pamper it, apply your favorite cream and put on your new pajamas! I assure you that you will leave with a smile on your face and feeling like the pretty woman you are!
There you have it! Our favorite products to pamper our body and soul during our postpartum period. Although sometimes it can be difficult, with prior preparation and self-love, it can become the most memorable time of all!
